Adjudicators & Tribunals

Stephen Raymond, President, Ontario Labour Managment Arbitrators' Association and Member, National Academy of Arbitrators

Caroline not only changed how I write but, perhaps even more importantly, she changed how I think about and approach writing. It has been, for me, the difference between night and day.

Kristjana Kellgren, Alberta Utilities Commission

Caroline worked with our team to develop and deliver a decision-writing course that was tailored to our organization and the work that we do. She is an engaging and effective instructor who motivates individuals to challenge the status quo in favour of clearer, more concise, issues-based writing.

Presentations & Workshops

Caroline designs and delivers presentations and workshops for tribunal members and the legal and technical staff that support them. Often co-teaching with her colleague Pamela Chapman, Caroline helps get everyone on the same page—literally—with an effective, efficient approach to decision writing. Topics include:

  • Decision-focused adjudication and the issue-driven approach
  • Plain language decision writing
  • Systems for Success: Developing a process that works for you
  • Effective self-editing
  • Effective editing for legal review teams
  • Vavilov and the Goldilocks question: How much is just right?

1:1 Writing Coaching

Adjudicators are professional writers, and professional writers know they can always get better. Like a coach working with an elite athlete, Caroline works with adjudicators at all stages of their careers to polish their technique or to target a particular skill. Her supportive, confidential advice is not based on opinion or personal preference, but on the neuroscience of how we process information and execute tasks and on the best practices taught in Canadian decision writing programs.
